Chùa Láng, Hà Nội

Chùa Láng is a famous spiritual site in Hà Nội, known for its distinctive architecture and many beautiful, impressive architectural masterpieces. Nearly 900 years old, the pagoda has witnessed many periods of change and is considered one of the capital's oldest pagodas.

The official name of Chùa Láng is Chiêu Thiền Tự. Renowned as a place for quiet contemplation in the heart of Hà Nội, its name carries special meaning: “Chiêu” refers to blessings manifesting in this sacred and auspicious place, while “Thiền” comes from the fact that Zen master Từ Đạo Hạnh was born here. The French called Chùa Láng Pagode des Dames.

Chùa Láng was built on the former home of Zen master Đạo Hành's parents. The site once belonged to Yên Lãng Commune, Hạ Canton, Vĩnh Thuận District, and later became Láng Village – an ancient village beside the Tô Lịch River.

During the Lý dynasty, Buddhism flourished throughout Đại Việt, and many pagodas were built or restored, including Chùa Trấn Quốc, Chùa Một Cột, Chùa Kim Liên, Chùa Hòe Nhai and others. King Lý Anh Tông had Chùa Láng built to worship the Buddha, Zen master Từ Đạo Hạnh and his father, King Lý Thần Tông.

Despite several restorations, Chùa Lãng has retained its original architecture, with a grand, balanced design that harmonizes with its surroundings. The pagoda was once known as the “Foremost Buddhist Monastery” because it had the most beautiful pine forest west of the Thăng Long Imperial Citadel. Chùa Láng was recognized as a national historical and cultural monument in 1962.
