Đầu Gỗ Cave, Hạ Long

Overview

Đầu Gỗ Cave is a limestone cave within the scenic Hạ Long Bay complex. The cave is about 3km from Tuần Châu Island and around 6km from the Bãi Cháy tourist area. Visitors can admire its untouched, ancient beauty and the many naturally formed stalagmites in unusual shapes.

In 1938, the renowned French travel magazine Merveille de Monde hailed it as the “cave of wonders” (Grotte des merveilles).

Legends of Đầu Gỗ Cave

The name “Đầu Gỗ” is tied to several mysterious legends, with 3 stories being the most widely told. According to the first legend, during the war against the Mongol Yuan army, General Trần Hưng Đạo had wooden stakes planted to destroy enemy ships. After the resounding victory, many wooden stakes remained in the cave, and the name “Đầu Gỗ” is said to be a variation of “giấu gỗ,” meaning “hidden wood.”

The 2nd legend says that an arc-shaped chain of islands in front of Đầu Gỗ Cave gave fishermen shelter during storms. While taking refuge and repairing their boats, they left pieces of wood behind, giving rise to the name “Đầu Gỗ.” The cave's name may also come from its distinctive shape. From a distance, it resembles a giant log with 2 holes at either end for threading rope through.

Whatever the explanation, these legends have undeniably added to the appeal of this landmark. Today, Đầu Gỗ Cave has become an inviting, unmissable destination on trips to Hạ Long.
