Hòa Bình Hydroelectric Reservoir - Southeast Asia's largest-scale hydropower project

The hydropower plant was built in 1979 and inaugurated in 1994. The project was constructed at Hòa Bình Reservoir in Hòa Bình Province on the Đà River, 73km northwest of Hà Nội.

The main body of the plant lies underground. To protect against earthquakes, seepage and cracking, Soviet experts drew on experience from building the Aswan Dam on the Nile River in Egypt, using cement grouting and injection drilling techniques.
