General Information

General Introduction

Hoan Kiem Lake or Lake of the Restored Sword is a natural freshwater lake in the center of Hanoi. Hoan Kiem Lake has existed for thousands of years, starting from a tributary of the Red River. When it was first formed, the lake was called Ta Vong Lake. The lake is also called Luc Thuy Lake by Hanoi people because the water in the lake is always clear green all year round.

This lake is the intersection point of various famous ancient such as: Hang Dao Street, Luong Van Can Street, Hang Ngang Street,... with the Western neighborhoods planned by the French more than 100 years ago: Trang Thi, Trang Tien, Dinh Tien Hoang, Ba Trieu, Hang Bai,... Due to its prime location, this place is very convenient for tourists to walk around the lake and visit famous landmarks as well as learn about the unique culture of the surrounding ancient streets.

Why is the lake named Hoan Kiem Lake?

According to legend, Le Loi accidentally caught a glowing sword blade and a sword hilt in two different locations, with the words Thuan Thien engraved on the sword. This discovery inspired Le Loi to firmly stand up and rally the people for the Lam Son uprising against the Ming army.

At that time, Le Loi felt that this was a divine sign and a heavenly treasure, so he decided to combine the two pieces into a complete sword. He, along with other prominent figures, went into battle wielding this sacred sword, defeating the Ming forces, and eventually ascending to the throne as the king.

At the beginning of 1428, while he was on a boat with his officials on Lake Ta Vong, the king saw the Golden Turtle, and the sacred sword beside him started to move and shine. The king understood the significance and decided to offer the precious sword to the turtle to return it to Long Quan. Since then, the lake has been called Hoan Kiem Lake or Sword Lake, which means "Lake of the Returned Sword."
