Hoàn Kiếm Lake (Hồ Gươm), Hà Nội

Hoàn Kiếm Lake, also known as Hồ Gươm, is a natural freshwater lake in the heart of Hà Nội. Hoàn Kiếm Lake dates back thousands of years and began as a tributary of the Red River. When it was first formed, it was known as Tả Vọng Lake. Hà Nội residents also called it Lục Thủy Lake because its water remained clear and green throughout the year.

The lake marks the meeting point between famous Old Quarter streets such as Hàng Đào, Lương Văn Can, and Hàng Ngang,... and the French Quarter streets planned by the French more than 100 years ago, including Tràng Thi, Tràng Tiền, Đinh Tiên Hoàng, Bà Triệu, and Hàng Bài,... Thanks to this prime location, visitors can easily stroll around the lake, visit famous landmarks, and discover the distinctive culture of the surrounding Old Quarter.

According to legend, Lê Lợi found a piece of metal shining like a sword blade and a sword hilt in two different places. The blade was engraved with the words Thuận Thiên. Lê Lợi resolved to rally the people and launch the Lam Sơn uprising against the Ming army.

Lê Lợi believed this was the will of heaven and a heavenly treasure, so he joined the pieces to form a complete sword. Wielding the precious sword, he and other patriots fought across the land, defeated the Ming army, and ascended the throne.

In early 1428, while sailing with his mandarins on Tả Vọng Lake, the king saw the Golden Turtle emerge as the precious sword beside him began to move and glow. Understanding the message, the king offered the sword to the Turtle Deity so it could be returned to the Dragon King. From then on, the lake became known as Hoàn Kiếm Lake, or Hồ Gươm.
