Great.

History of St. Joseph's Cathedral, Hanoi

St. Joseph's Cathedral, Hanoi was built by the French colonialists on the former grounds of Bao Thien Pagoda - a pagoda under King Ly Thanh Tong. In the 18th century, Bao Thien Pagoda was demolished and became a marketplace for Dai Viet people. Subsequently, the Catholic Church received permission from the authorities to build a cathedral on the site. Initially, it was only temporarily made of wood.

By the end of the 19th century (1884), the cathedral was renovated and constructed more grandly using fired bricks, with design and supervision by Bishop Puginier. The church was completed by 1887, and the inauguration ceremony was held on Christmas of that year.
