Đền Gióng, Sóc Sơn

The Đền Gióng Historical Site lies on Vệ Linh Mountain (also known as Sóc Mountain) in Phù Linh Village, Phù Linh Commune, Sóc Sơn District, Hà Nội. Just over 30 km from central Hà Nội, it is one of the area's most popular destinations for both domestic and international visitors.

The origins of the Đền Gióng Historical Site are closely tied to the legend of Thánh Gióng, who drove out the Ân invaders and restored peace to the realm of Nam. Thánh Gióng is regarded as one of the Four Immortals in Vietnamese folk belief, embodying the indomitable, resilient, and courageous spirit of resistance against foreign invaders.

Reaching the Thánh Gióng monument requires quite a long walk

As foretold, the Tống army suffered a crushing defeat in that battle and was forced to retreat. Out of gratitude and reverence for the deity, King Lê Đại Hành ordered a statue to be carved from agarwood and transformed the shrine into the imposing Temple of Phù Đổng Thiên Vương. The temple was designated a national historical site in 1962.

After many years as a witness to the nation's history, the Sóc Temple complex has developed into a system that includes Đền Trình, Đền Mẫu, Non Nước Pagoda, Đại Bi Pagoda, Đền Thượng, Hòn đá Trồng, the Thánh Gióng Monument, and numerous stone steles recording the history and traditions of the Đền Gióng Festival. The Vietnam Buddhist Academy is also located near the Đền Gióng site.
