Chau Son Holy Mother Monastery is a Cistercian monastery where priests retreat. It is also known as Chau Son Monastery, Chau Son Church or Gach Church (Brick Church). Little is known about the monastery because it is remote and only accessible to pilgrims. However, it has a mysterious beauty as well as a huge area inside.

Located in Phu Son commune, Nho Quan district, Ninh Binh province, the Monastery is surrounded by walls, rocky paths and deserted paths. But the beauty of this place can attract visitors.

Father Anselmo Le Huu Tu founded the monastery in 1936. Bishop John Baotixita Nguyen Ba Tong first asked the superior of Cistercian Phuoc Son Monastery in Quang Tri province to send a group of monks to the north to establish a religious order in Phat Diem diocese. The first stone was laid to create the Cathedral and the grounds of the monastery on September 19, 1939, and the Cathedral was inaugurated on November 4, 1945.

Architecture of houses in Chau Son Holy Mother Monastery

Chau Son Holy Mother Monastery was built in European Gothic design, hidden among the beautiful mountains of the classic city. The total houses in the monastery are built with orange bricks covered by moss and traits of time.

The walls are 0.6m thick and surround the houses which are enforced by 1.2 thick pillars. The harmony of windows is one of the most significant and featured points. Not too sophisticated, but the windows have their own impressive and unique property.

Sacred cathedral

The Cathedral is the place for worshiping Jesus and praying daily. This is the biggest construction in the monastery with a high white dome at 21m high in the center of the cathedral.

Outside are pictures depicting Jesus and Christianity symbols. An aisle passing through the cathedral, under the sunshine dropping windows, brings a peaceful and comfortable feeling.
